Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Young Leaders' Conference - 2018

On Sunday 11th March 2018, Georgie and Rhiannon travelled to Sydney to go to the National Young Leader's Conference. We travelled to Wagga Wagga in Mr Powter's car. When we got there, we had to board a REX plane that was very small! When it was time for lift off, it was very bumpy as the plane went down the runway very fast.

Georgie and Rhiannon listened to what the flight attendant had to say about safety and after that, we listened to music. After about 60 minutes of flying, we could see water, which was the ocean near Sydney. It was really cool! Georgie thought that the plane was going to go down but we were fine. When we landed, it smelt like ocean water because the Sydney airport is right next to the ocean. We went inside the airport and met up with Mark Jagers who was our free taxi driver. Mr. Jagers drove us to our hotel where we dropped of our luggage so we could go to the Powerhouse Museum. The Powerhouse Museum was massive! We saw some pretty dresses and had a turn at Virtual Reality, which was weird.

There was a big light exhibition where we played hopscotch and when we stepped on it made a noise and lit up. There was a scanner that when you coloured in a person you have to scan it and it came up on a big screen for everyone to see. It was fun. After the light exhibition, we went over to a little place where you could make stuff with clay. These kids thought that Mr. P was staff member because he was wearing his Y.P.S staff shirt. It was pretty funny because Mr. P played along.

We went out of the museum to go find food. We found a little café outside of the Powerhouse Museum so we went there. Georgie and I got a bucket of hot chips and played on the play equipment. Next adventure was LUNA PARK! We went there on a ferry. We stayed there for a couple hours and went on heaps of rides including a rollercoaster, Cony Island and even a haunted house. Then we went back to the ferry port to wait for our ferry. IT TOOK FOREVER! But finally,, one came. We walked back to the hotel after we got back off the ferry. We stayed there for a bit then we went to get dinner at the Hard Rock Café. The food was really good. Then after dinner we went back to the apartments to go to bed. The next morning we got up to get ready for the Young Leaders Conference. We walked over to the place it was being held and we sat down for the start of the conference. Dj Raph greeted us and his friend named Jemma. We listened to them for a bit then our first speaker came on to the stage his name was John and he had no legs. He taught us about resilience and bullying. The next speakers name was Lauren Cheadle. She plays for the Sydney 6ers. She told us to always follow our dreams. The next speaker was Harrison Craig who helped us to set some goals. Georgie even got to ask him a question! Then the final speaker was Matt Cosgrove who showed us his journey of becoming an author. After that we went to the airport and flew home. We had so much fun and wish we could go to Sydney again.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:;" 9pt="">We are pleased to announce that Little Learners will again run in 2018. The program will commence on Friday, 24 February 2017 and will take place every Friday morning. It will be staffed by Mrs Gina Haines with support from Mrs Kay Strachan and all children 3-5 years of age are welcome to attend. Due to increased demand for places we have capped the program at 20 students and the school is planning an enrolment policy for Little Learners to ensure students enrolling in Kindergarten at Yanco Public School have priority placement.

ImagiNATION - Young Leaders Conference

Together we can!

This year's theme at the Young Leaders Conference in Sydney has certainly encouraged us, as young leaders at Yanco Public School. At the Conference there were five, inspiring speakers who told their stories of how they came to be leaders in their fields. These role models spoke of the different challenges they faced and how they overcame them.

Sam Skinner, the head of Halogen Foundation that organises the annual conference spoke about the core values we have and how they shape us as leaders. Sometimes we have to sacrifice our beliefs in order to help others. "Everyone in this room is a leader, but everyone has different ways of being a good leader."

The second speaker, Sam Webb, who is the founder of ‘Livin', spoke about ‘Patience, Positivity & Perseverance'. He lost a close friend to suicide and realised when we say, "We're fine" it really means "Help me".

"Bravery over perfection" was the motivation for 15 year old Jade Hameister, to be the youngest person to ski to the North Pole. She now plans to ski across Antarctica and Greenland. Jade told us how we often let fear get in the way and that we need to be brave and not let it conquer us and our dreams.

Dr Jordan Nguyen was one of our personal favourites who is using technology to improve the lives of others. He had a diving accident that left him paralysed for one whole day. During his stay in hospital he had time to look at things from a different perspective after he met a disabled lady who is now his friend. Jess suffers from severe cerebral palsy but runs her own company, is a skilled photographer and inspires his work. He has created a wheelchair that picks up brainwaves so you can control the chair even if you are so disabled that you have little or no mobility.

Another one of his technological inventions was featured on ABC showing Riley. Riley has severe disability, but could drive a car that is controlled by his eyes. Dr Jordan believes we can create a better world and that technology helps improve the life of others.

Finally the two comperes, Scott Tweedie & Gemma Knight, interviewed Barry Conrad who sings and acts. Barry spoke about when he was bullied, advice given to him when on the X-Factor and the importance of being the better version of yourself. He urged leaders to use their position to help others to reach leadership level. He reminded us it's ok to make mistakes and we need to dig deep and move forward.

It was an amazing experience and we rate it 11/10.

We made new friends with students from Leeton and Whitton Murrami Public Schools, experienced lots of public transport and learnt not to stand on the outside deck of the ferry during big swells. We made a big splash with the Friday evening commuters! Thanks to the teachers, Mr Allen, Mr Adams and Mrs Ramponi who took us on this adventure (peak hour traffic included!).

Kindergarten 2017 Transition Program

Our Transition to School Program will commence on Wednesday, 17th August 2016 and will run for 10 weeks, concluding on Wednesday, 2nd November 2016. Each session will run from 12:30 until 3:15pm. Children need to bring a hat, drink and something for lunch. Parents are not required to stay for the session but are most welcome to, if they wish.

The Transition Program is designed to help familiarise both you and your child with our school environment so that by February 2017 you and your child will all be confident and happy at our school. The opportunity also enables new students and parents to develop positive relationships with members of the school community. Enrolment packages for 2017 can be collected from the office at any time.

Our transition Program is open to all four year old children who will, or may be, commencing Kindergarten in 2017 and may be considering Yanco Public School.

Orientation Day

As part of the transition program, Kindergarten Orientation Days will be held on Wednesday, 9th and 16th November 2016 from 9:00 am - 3:15 pm. These days are for those students who will be enrolling at Yanco Public for 2017.

Children will be issued their new school hat and orientation package on the second Orientation Day. Parents will also be invited to the Library at 2.45 pm for a Parent Orientation session. It would be appreciated if parents could hand in enrolment forms, birth certificates and immunisation letters prior to or at the parent session.

Young Leaders trip to Sydney

On Sunday, 28th February the Year 6 Student Leadership Team, including school captains Kai Hammond and Raena Dixon, went on a bus to Sydney for the 2016 Young Leaders Conference. On the bus we were joined by the Whitton-Murrami and Leeton Public Schools leaders.

First stop was the Dog on the Tuckerbox where we had recess. We then stopped at Goulburn for lunch before completing the trip to Sydney. Our accommodation was at the Quest Hotel and this was great and close to Olympic Park, where the conference was held at Allphones Arena.

On Sunday night we caught a double deck train to Circular Quay, where we looked at different buildings like the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. At the bridge we sat down for a picnic and we were facing the Opera House. This was great, especially for Sonny Lipscombe, who had never seen the harbour before.

On Monday, we had breakfast and then we went to Allphones Arena, which is next to the ANZ Stadium. The lines were very long and they didn't have enough doors into the arena, so we had to sneak into through Door 11. One of the schools who went arrived in a stretch ‘Hummer' limousine! Police Commissioner Andrew Scippioni was the best speaker on the day. He said ‘Master the little before the big'. There were about 6,000 students at this conference.

We then went back to the accommodation, changed into casual clothes and headed back on a train to Circular Quay and caught a ferry over to Manly. We had hot fish and chips on the beach and then caught the ferry and the train back.

We got up early next day and hopped straight on the bus and started off home. Miss Harrison and Mrs Gill gave Mr Allen the wrong directions so we ending up driving around Olympic park in circles until we found our way out! On the way home we had launch at Gundagai.

It was great fun and very tiring, but worth it.

Below are some of the K/1/2 students' recounts of their recent excursion.

On Thursday, K/1/2 went to the Altina Wildlife Park and we saw crocodiles. We got to ride on a horse and cart and we saw goats.

By Stephania

Last Thursday, K/1/2 went to Altina Wildlife Park to look at the animals. There was some meerkats and red bears and a zebra and giraffes and monkeys and camels and a wild dog and lions and a wombat and kangaroo.

       By Gabriel

On Thursday, K/1/2 went to Altina Wildlife Park and we were a little bit late, but it was all right. The man showed us the animals at the front, then he showed us at the back and we went on a horse and cart. We saw zebras, crocodiles, hyenas, red pandas and an addax.

By Asha

On Thursday morning at 9 am, we went to Altina Wildlife Park. We saw crocodiles, Tasmanian devils, and meerkats, then we went on the horses and cart. We saw a donkey and we saw lots of animals. Then we went to the white lions, the zebra, then the addax, hyenas, then the camels, then the goats and then we had a sizzle.

Altina Wildlife Park

Darlington Point.

We saw lions, giraffes, monkeys, hyenas, deers and hyena dogs.

By Dakoda

Altina Wildlife Park

On Thursday morning, we went to Altina Wildlife Park. We left at 9 am. When we arrived a man gave us some rules. We were not allowed to touch the glass or it would scare the animals away and not to put your fingers near the crocodiles and not to run on the grass.

				National Young Leaders Conference

On Sunday, 22nd March 2015 we departed Leeton on the bus bound for Sydney to attend the National Young Leaders Conference with staff and students from Leeton Public and Whitton-Murrami schools. We stayed in Narrabeen at the Big 4 Holiday Park.

On Monday, we were up nice and early to attend the conference at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. We listened to people talk about young leaders, leadership and how to become a great leader; these people included Bindi Irwin, Mike Beard, the creators of "Paper Planes" and Rachael Leach (3rd place- The Voice)

We found the conference to be very interesting. After the conference, we all went to Circular Quay to look at the Sydney Aquarium where we all got to touch a star fish and other small sea creatures which was lots of fun.

We took lots of pictures and saw some amazing things whilst we were away, including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the beach!

We have learnt a lot about leadership and look forward to putting some of our news skills in to place.

				National Young Leaders Day

by Kyle Zylstra and Talee Warren

On Sunday, 31st March, we caught the bus at 8.30 am at the Leeton Public School to travel to Sydney for the National Young Leaders Day. We travelled with Leeton Public School, Whitton Public School and Murrami Public School. On the way up we stopped twice. We stopped at the Dog on the Tuckerbox in Gundagai and at Berrima Park. Whilst stopped at the Dog on the Tuckerbox we took some photos and had our recess. At Berrima, we had our lunch in the park and played cricket with some people we met. Once in Sydney we went for a walk on the beach. We stayed at the Narrabeen Big 4 Caravan Park, right near the beach. We had dinner at the Narrabeen North Side Cafe and after dinner we went straight to bed so that we were ready for a big day at the conference.

On Monday, 1st April we woke up at 6 am to have breakfast and get ready for the conference. We got on the bus at 7.10 am and headed in to the city centre. On the way we caught a ferry and got to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and lots of boats and yachts. Once we arrived at the conference we listened to people talk about leadership, times of hardship, being who you are and becoming successful leaders. We got to listen to famous children's author Andy Griffin speak about his career and his books. He was hilarious! We also got to listen to the Hon Bob Carr speak about politics and being a leader.

After the conference was over, the girls all got to go shopping in the Queen Victoria Building with Mrs Gill. While the girls shopped the boys went to the aquarium with Mr Allen, Mr Adams and Mr Campbell, where we got to see exciting sea life. After shopping and the aquarium, we all met at the Sydney Opera House and took some pictures. We travelled back to Manly on the ferry and went and got some dinner at the Manly Corso and took it to the beach. After dinner, we went back to the Caravan Park and went to bed, exhausted after a very big day.

On Tuesday, we got up at 6 am, had breakfast and got on the bus to head home. We stopped at Wagga Wagga to get some McDonalds. We got back on the bus and arrived home at around 4.30 pm

It was a big couple of days away, full of great experiences! We would like to thank Mr Allen for taking us on such a great trip and thank the organisers of the Young Leaders Conference for putting on a fantastic and inspiring show.

Who has done a course on being a parent?

Most of our knowledge comes from what we learnt from our parents as we were growing up. Being a good parent is central to developing strong, healthy, resilient children and families. More than ever parents are turning to schools fo advice, information and direction about how to raise their kids. Yet, their issues are increasingly complex, demanding specific expertise and advice. This year, our school has become part of the Michael Grose "Parenting Ideas" program. Attached is a copy of Issue 10 of the quarterly parenting magazine.Issue 10 (pdf 5086 KB)
